What is an Elimination Diet and why do it?
When people suffer from chronic symptoms (especially gastro-intestinal, neurological, respiratory, or skin disorders) food intolerance or food allergy can be suspected. An Elimination Diet is the traditional tool for finding out which foods cause your symptoms.
Did you know that chronic symptoms are a telltale sign of food intolerance? There are only four main kinds of Food Intolerance (not to be confused with Food Allergy) and they are widely suffered:
- Dairy (lactose) intolerance – 75% or 3 in 4 people
- Fructose intolerance – 35% or 1 in 3 people
- Yeast Sensitivity – 33% or 1 in 3 people
- Gluten intolerance (including wheat) – 15% or 1 in 7 people
- Food allergy – 1% or 1 in 100 people
If you are one of the 75% of people who are affected to some extent by food intolerance, it makes sense to investigate - doesn't it? Compare your symptoms in the free Symptoms Matrix
In the old days, an Elimination Diet meant cutting back to a very restrictive diet for 4 - 6 weeks. Allowed foods are lamb, rice and some vegetables. The purpose was to clear the body of all suspected foods. Unfortunately there are hundreds of foods which can cause food intolerance, so none of these can be eaten during an Elimination Diet. Dining in restaurants can be very difficult. Many people found this old-fashioned Elimination Diet tedious and difficult to endure, and there was the risk of missing out on nutrients. Therefore the dietician or doctor may have prescribed supplementary vitamins or minerals for the duration of the diet.
Isn't there a better way? Yes! There is now. With our 17 years of research of the medical journals we have designed the Detection Diet Journal to deliver the accuracy of the Elimination diet - but it’s much faster and really easy.
Instead of 6 weeks eating only lamb, greens and rice - the free Detection Diet Journal gives you proof in only 21 days - and you get to eat a huge variety of foods. What’s more the Detection Diet Journal is free.
Why is the Detection Diet better than the old-fashioned Elimination Diet?
The old-time Elimination Diet used to be quite restrictive. It meant no bread, cereal, noodles, biscuits, pizza, cakes, cookies, gravies etc. There was no beer, wine or spirits; no spicy food, no processed foods, refined flours, sweets, sugar or dried fruits. In those days you also had to live without yogurt, milk, ice cream, chocolate, coffee and tea. Other disallowed foods included soy, soy milk, fish and seafood. Not much at all in those days!
But now that has all changed. The Detection Diet Journal finds your food sensitivity safely and quickly - best of all, it's free to subscribers.
What kind of Elimination Diet is the Detection Diet?

Do I have to live without favourite foods on an Elimination Diet?
There are foods we enjoy and then there can be foods we "love" - those we feel we cannot live without. The foods you 'love' may be exactly the ones that are causing the trouble. In fact there may be some degree of food addiction or cravings involved. These are classic signs of food intolerance.
You may want to consult your healthcare professional if you believe you have a food addiction. Allergies can cause severe reactions.
We can come to regard some foods as ‘comfort foods’. This is not an addiction, but may be a sign of food intolerance. The Detection Diet gives you much more choice than the old-fashioned elimination diet - and is much quicker and more accurate.
Why must I keep a journal on the Elimination Diet?
Keeping a journal puts system into your exploration.
Without exact records of what you ate, how and when it affected you, it’s easy to get muddled. The Detection Diet Journal takes you through the phases of discovery, with tips, traps and guidelines on how to record your progress. For your free copy - Sign up now

How long does it take to do an Elimination Diet?
It takes 6 - 8 weeks to do the old-fashioned elimination diet - and even then it may not give good results.
However - our streamlined and accurate version, the Detection Diet Journal takes only 21 days - and it's free to subscribers.
The old information was: eat only lamb, rice, peas and pears. However we now know that peas and pears are not good on an elimination diet because of the fructose content. That restricts eating to lamb, green vegetables and rice for 6 weeks. Because of lacking nutrients - this method is no longer seen as useful.
Many years ago Deborah Manners tried this type of Elimination diet and it did find one of her intolerances. But because it was so difficult to maintain - she began designing a new and streamlined journal system. . . one that anybody could use.
She designed a proper laid-out Journal - and a series of food substitution guides for Dairy-free, Fructose-free, Yeast-free and others - so users could select appropriate foods.
Can I cheat on the Elimination Diet?
Yes! Of course you can always cheat. But you will be the first to know you have cheated - and it will wreck your results. You will be unable to figure out which foods caused which symptoms.
Can I just test a couple of foods I suspect on the Elimination Diet?
No - it is best to work out which of the main food sensitivities you have and stay with that diet. Is it Gluten, Dairy, Yeast, or something else?
Or you could try one of the diets by following one of our Guides (e.g. try Gluten-Free) to see if you get well. Food guides available in the Shop.
