What Causes Constipation?

Definition, Prevalence, Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Constipation is difficulty evacuating waste from the body - defined as fewer than three bowel movements per week. Many doctors now favour the simple cure of dietary changes which observe the patient's food sensitivity, rather than medication or surgical intervention.

This approach addresses undiscovered food intolerance - the natural cure.

What is the definition of Constipation?

Definition of Constipation

Constipation is defined as fewer than three bowel motions per week. (NIDDK)

Constipation is a very troublesome and distressing intestinal symptom. The thin muscle of the intestine becomes sluggish and cannot move the body's waste products through at the usual rate. As a result - too much water is removed in the large colon - and stools become dry, hard and very difficult to move. Sufferers have difficulty eliminating waste - and commonly strain the muscles and tissues involved.

If left untreated - constipation leads on to other symptoms:

    • Rectal and anal pain and spasms
    • Haemorrhoids or swollen rectal blood vessels
    • Chronic belly pain
    • Abdominal bloating
    • Depression and/or anxiety

Research now shows that the inability to fully digest some foods (food intolerance) is reponsible for many cases of constipation.

How common is Constipation?

Prevalence of Constipation

  • One study puts the prevalence of constipation at 16% - with women a little more affected than men
  • Around 50 million Americans are affected by frequent or chronic Constipation
  • In a Swedish study more than 2,000 people were surveyed about constipation with these results:
    • "About 20% of all women considered themselves constipated
    • The use of laxatives increased with age
    • 22% and 10% of elderly women and men, respectively, used laxatives ... for at least every fourth toilet procedure."
  • In another study of over 4,000 babies less than two years old it was found that between 3% and 10% suffered from constipation.

Solution for Constipation

Most constipation is brought about by the inability to fully digest foods - or food intolerance (references below). So when you identify your Problem food and substitute it - you will cure chronic Constipation. All it takes is a purpose-designed Journal like the Detection Diet Journal.

The Power of a Journal to Test for Food Intolerance

A journal puts system into your exploration. It's easy. All you do is track your symptoms as you switch a few foods. We recommend the purpose-designed Detection Diet Journal in  the Healing Program.

You'll also need food substitution guides so you can enjoy a wide variety of great foods. The full series of six Complete Guides (to Gluten-free, Fructose-Free etc. ) is included in the Healing Program. Find out more >

What causes Constipation?

Causes of Chronic Constipation

Lack of exercise and some medications are part of the problem. But most Constipation comes from eating foods which you cannot fully digest - (the definition of food intolerance). So if you have constipation - there is a good chance you have food intolerance - even if you don't notice other symptoms.

When only partial digestion happens - strange 'foreign' proteins are produced. These interfere with normal bodily processes and can cause, among other effects, inflammation and damage to bodily tissues. When the muscle motility of the small intestine is affected food waste cannot move through the gut as quickly as usual. Too much water is removed from the waste making it hard and lumpy leading - among other things, to Constipation.

If you get frequent constipation it is a good idea to check yourself for food intolerance - even if you have never before suspected it. The easiest and most accurate way to do this is with the Detection Diet Journal: track your symptoms as you switch a few foods.

How do you treat Constipation?

Types of Treatment for Constipation

Temporary relief treatment: You can use medications or supplements from the pharmacy for temporary relief. Some people choose to use "Fibre" preparations or probiotics thinking that will help.  But many are made with ingredients which cause Constipation in the first place. Unfortunately - few people ever realise there could be a food intolerance to blame for Constipation - and unfortunately it is not given high priority in medical schools - so many doctors are unaware.

Permanent Cure: Find the actual cause of your Constipation (find your food intolerance) and substitute that food for other great foods. It's easy! These days there are so many great food options - it's simple to substitute the problem ones. And the good news is - your Constipation begins healing within days.

"Hi again, I have come to the end of the elimination diet and I have proved without a shadow of a doubt that I DO have a food intolerance.  I don't expect my doctor to believe me as she hasn't been very helpful at all, just keeps putting it down to IBS....also thank you so much for very nearly curing a tremendous problem that I have had for over 20 years. Linda".

When will I be cured of Constipation?

What is the cure for Constipation?

Here at foodintol® we don't regard Constipation as a disease. So it doesn't need medications to be 'cured'. Constipation - like any other food intolerance symptom - is the result of eating foods which are not right for you.

Others may be able to digest them fully. But you cannot. And trying to do so will only continue to you make you ill.

  • You will be "cured" when you discover your food intolerance and substitute those foods
  • No drugs, treatments or surgical procedures are needed - just the right fresh foods for you

As you know - food intolerance is in your genes - and you cannot change those. Just like having brown eyes or freckles - you got your genes from your parents, grandparents and other ancestors. And if you have children – you have already passed on that same genetic material.

"I have done the journal and found to my surprise that after 56 years of being constipated (going once a week/fortnight from a young child) - I am going every day.

It's a miracle AND I have been suffering from insomnia (thought to be hormone related) for 7 or 8 years and am now sleeping every night like a log.  I am extremely happy and want to thank you for your help.

My daughter had done the program and suggested I try it.  I am very glad I did.... my life has been turned around.  Thanks - Lesley : )"

I think I might have food intolerance: What should I do?

Beginning with our free e-book, we can help you establish if you are suffering from gluten or wheat intolerance or if your symptoms indicate an intolerance to dairy, fructose or yeast. You may even be suffering from more than one food intolerance.

The research indicates doing nothing can be a risk. Undiagnosed food intolerance can cause serious long-term health problems like osteoporosis, anaemia and many others. Sign up for the Free E-book 'How to Tell If You Have Food Intolerance'
